Originally built in 1934 as the residence of Mr. Du Yueshen, a then renowned tycoon, Buildings 1 and 2 are two 5-floor buildings with link walkways. During the years that followed, these buildings were used by Banque Franeo-China, then by the Communication Bank and finally as the United States Consulate before becoming a part of Donghu Hotel. In 1940, Building 3 was erected as a 4-floor apartment building, housing 8 units of 3-bedroom suites. Buildings 4 and 5 were constructed in the 1930s, also as 4-floor apartment blocks. The grandest and most historical of all the Donghu Hotel structures is Building 7. A French-style 3-floor residence, built in 1925 as the residence of a banker, it showcases the lavish lifestyle of the rich in Shanghai. During the 1950s, this building was the commercial affairs office of the Soviet Union.

Donghu has several Chinese restaurants, banquet halls and multi-function rooms. The Chinese restaurants offer Shanghai, Guangdong, Sichuang and other cuisines, and they have recently introduced some seasonal speciality food that is especially good for health and beauty. The banquet hall in the main building, elegantly decorated with a separate meeting space, is praised as a “state banquet hall”, where government leaders entertain important Chinese and foreign guests and where traditional Chinese delicacies are prepared personally by state banquet chefs. In addition, the hotel serves exotic cuisines such as Japanese food, Korean barbecue and beef hotpot. The palatial main banquet hall can house 200, an ideal venue for wedding feasts and large dinner parties.
