Blessed with a near perfect location in the centre of ancient Shrewsbury, the Prince Rupert Hotel is the perfect base to explore this bustling town and its many attractions. Shrewsbury is a stunning historic town with over 660 listed buildings including a Norman Abbey dating back to 1083, a medieval Castle and The Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery housed in a 16th century timber framed warehouse. All of which are just a short walk from the Prince Rupert Hotel.
Part of the town's medieval street plan still exists with Shrewsbury's Shuts and Passages - a unique maze of narrow alleys, which criss-cross the town centre. Many of Shrewsbury's streets have some very strange street names including Dogpole and Mardol, Gullet Passage and Grope Lane!
Shrewsbury also has great shops, especially the kind of interesting, independent shops that so many towns have lost or let go.
By Road
From the M6 - Exit the M6 at junction 10a (junction T8 on the M6 toll) onto the M54 towards Shrewsbury. Follow the M54 until it joins the A5. Follow the A5, then the A49 and head for the town centre. Proceed over the English Bridge and bear right up Wyle Cop. Go past the Lion Hotel on your left. Fifty yards further on, on your right, a red post box indicates an immediate right turn into Fish Street (caution, narrow street - drive over the pavements). Drive up Fish Street to the front of the Prince Rupert Hotel. If you miss the turning into Fish Street, continue along the High Street and follow the one-way system around the town and approach the Prince Rupert Hotel from Church Street.
From the A5 - Follow the A5 and then the A458 towards Shrewsbury and head from the town centre. Drive over the Welsh Bridge and bear bear along the Smithfield Road (River on your left). Move into the right hand lane prior to the first set of traffic lights. Once over the lights bear right proceeding to the next set of traffic lights at a T-junction (opposite the castle). Drive over the lights and bear immediate right into Castle Street. Follow the one-way system to the top of Castle Street and around to the left into St. Mary's Street. You will see St. Mary's Church on your left (behind the bus stops). Look immediately to the right and after a few yards take the right turn into Church Street (caution - narrow street over pedestrian paving). Drive along Church Street turning right at the bottom to approach the front entrance of the Prince Rupert Hotel. Should you miss the turning into Church Street, continue ahead moving into the right hand lane and bear right at the T-junction (opposite the Lion Hotel).
