Protected by the highest summit of Gargano; Monte Calvo (1056 metres), San Giovanni was founded immediately after the year 1000 by refugees of surrounding villages, on the ruins of a pre-existing village dating as far back as the 4th century B.C. There are still some visible remains of this village, such as tombstones and an antique circular baptistery. Under the reign of Federico II, San Giovanni was fortified and gifted with a castle, but, despite the defence erected, San Giovanni Rotondo was unable to defend itself against the attacks and raids by the Angioini and the Aragonesi.

Whilst here, a visit to the atmospheric Cappuccini convent, where the catholic monk Padre Pio received the gift of stigmata, is a must.

San Giuseppe Artignano’s church - opened at Padre Pio’s request on 11 September 1965.

San Caterina’s church - once Santa Maria Maggiore church, this is the most antique church in the village, and can be found in the University of San Giovanni Rotondo.
